Sleeping Bear
We were greater than the great lakes
And I let you know
Just how much
My body takes
We awake
And find ourselves sleeping on the shore
With your mother looking out and listening
We were glistening
And rising to the top
Wind sent the trees to shake
Leaves flutter in the wake
Leaving me fighting
Just for a breath
While you lay your head low
And breathe only water
I am thinking of your mother
And her precious only daughter
What if the story was told
And stretched and askew
What if it wasn’t the islands?
What if it was me? What if it was you?
Would it still be told by few,
Believing it true?
Winds
And sand
And forest grow
But I held your fingertips
Like our final kiss
Just like your lips
And I let you know
Just how much
My body takes
We awake
And find ourselves sleeping on the shore
With your mother looking out and listening
We were glistening
And rising to the top
Wind sent the trees to shake
Leaves flutter in the wake
Leaving me fighting
Just for a breath
While you lay your head low
And breathe only water
I am thinking of your mother
And her precious only daughter
What if the story was told
And stretched and askew
What if it wasn’t the islands?
What if it was me? What if it was you?
Would it still be told by few,
Believing it true?
Winds
And sand
And forest grow
But I held your fingertips
Like our final kiss
Just like your lips
