Apostrophe

In the heat of the moment and missing
all this came from kissing
all this came from wishing
all this for her heart to stay kept

the windows and shutters
the rain in the gutters
out back, the butterfly flutters
or butters...
one or the other

and if it weren't for her brother
or her childish mother
if it weren't for her lack of a father
why bother

he was a serial lover
he was so seemingly above her
he was so amusingly rich
and kissibly kitsch

but the phone, it never dazed her
and the letters never phased her
caught up in the smudges
from the cheap eraser

well, the wishes weren't kept
and the sleeping was slept
in different beds

well, the party had left
and the garden had wept
and every single time she stepped, she stepped on a dream

but it really wasn't as hard as it seems
it really wasn't as sour as it sounds
because once she hit the ground
and found the town
she knew how to get down.
