First person.

If anything
take me as a lesson
take me as i am
wrap me up
in linen
and keep me away

cowered under crutch
you never asked for much
and i never gave

in my first person poetry
the words switch their places
and replace
their traces
with syllables
and type

but it's all hype

green like the garden
but, brown took the flowers
and i'm stuck
watching, listening
for hours

To: Mother

where were you
when my knees gave themselves out?

and where were you
when i let myself down?

standing with a crutch
and hints of a past

your beauty faded
and all along the way
you jaded
they stated

for every lesson
i learned
i grew

for every time you held me close
i couldn't help
but recognize
that you knew otherwise
and i looked right through your eyes

asking for help
you passed on the train

turning wheels
and windows

i kept to myself
and stayed outside
where the cool breeze teaches
and the warm winds whisper while i wish
for winter
I know what not to say,
but
that's not to say
that i know what to say

The farmer's dream

cornered in the backyard
i am alone and scared
she is standing right in front of me
and i cant help but stare

grass grows long without care
and browns like her hair

fences, rusted out
help to keep it clean
tomorrow, borrow the farmer's dream

rest,
baby,
rest

rest,
honey,
rest

taken to the church
sitting in the back row
watching files and lines
tiles
and tines
friends of mine

i cant be there for you
i could never
this is not a merry go round
i'm not coming back

oh, tilt a whirl
beer for breakfast
white wine with dinner
who's the sinner
who's the winner

Hairpins at midnight.

With a hat and a plan
she turned around
and whispered
and called me her man

with a knife in hand
we ran
through the tall tall summer grass
dodging fireflies and the like
oh tonight

if i could start it all over i would
if i had it to do again
would i stop this procrastination?
if i could recover the past
box it, wrap it
and cover it
i would
believe me
i would

she kept hairpins in her pockets
she kept her eyes tucked in her sockets
and my picture in her locket
that i broke
oh
what a joke
what a joke

but we never said a word
without
a
sip of alcohol.
